Gear

Andrew uses quality gear to deliver a quality sound which is clear, punchy and has a strong bottom end. His gear is reliable, quick to setup and easy for sound engineers to get a good sound. Check out the photos section to see the gear. Below is a brief explanation of any modifications and special features of the gear that Andrew uses. You can learn more about the gear by going to the links section for websites of each manufacturer. Here is a list of gear that Andrew uses:

Basses:

  • Lakland 5 string Skyline Series active bass with a maple neck and bartolini pickups (1 x hum-bucking pickup and 1 x jazz pickup). The scale length on this bass is longer than usual (35 inches as opposed to 34) resulting in a tighter B string which is more defined and punchy for the low notes. The EQ sounds great flat and is suitable for all styles. A great bass to play. Looks, sounds and plays like a top of the range bass should.
  • Fender Jaguar Fretless Bass with Nordstrand jazz noiseless pickups. A Fender Jaguar is like a Fender Jazz bass on steriods! It can be used in active mode for a more modern sound or passive for a more traditional sound. The pickups can run in series (like a p-bass) or in parallel (like a jazz bass). This bass is very fast to play and has that great fretless sound. It has also been modified to have a volume for each pickup (more like a traditional Jazz bass). All tech work on this bass has been performed by Matt Bulluss at the Bass People in Annandale.
  • Fender P-Bass with a rosewood fingerboard, badass II bridge. THE traditional sound for bass. Covers any style and sounds like a bass should. Has the retro '51 look (like a telecaster bass) and the '59 pickup. Strung with Thomastik strings. This bass also has been fitted with a hipshot D-tuner to instantly flip the E string down to dropped D.
  • Ibanez 4 string Roadstar bass with a p-bass passive pickup and maple neck. Currently has flat wound strings on it which is great for the Motown sound. Also sounds great with a pick for an old school rock sound. Modified tuners and bridge and controls.
  • Fender 3/4 size Bronco Bass for students to have a free trial lesson on. This bass is available to hire with an amp, lead, and strap, at a cheap price for students to try out or until they buy their own.

Amps + Speakers:

  • Markbass Momark Bass Head. This amp is a modular system featuring 3 different components that can be interchanged (preamp, EQ and master sections). Andrew uses tube or solid state preamps, a 7 band graphic EQ and a master section featuring Markbass's famous LPF and LMF featues. At 800 watts at 4 ohms, this amp delivers plenty of power and reproduces the sound of Andrew's basses. A clean, well defined amp.
  • Markbass 2x10inch Traveller
  • Markbass 1x12inch Traveller
  • Markbass Mini CMD 121P (used at Christian Life Centre). This is a small but powerful amp perfect for smaller gigs. Warm punchy and easy to use.

Effects:

  • Roland V-Bass - for effects and bass and amp simulations. Andrew uses this for recording to produce some amazing synth sounds. Uses a special Roland GK-3B pickup.
  • Boss RC-50 Loop Station - Andrew uses this to loop percussion (shakers, tambourine, stompbox etc) for gigs for his duo A-LiVE. This setup is also available to singer songwriters if they want to hire Andrew for an acoustic gig.

Accessories:

  • Custom instrument leads and speaker leads from the Bass People Shop in Annandale
  • DR Strings 45-125 for Lakland
  • Thomastik German Strings 45-105 - for Fender P-Bass
  • Flatwound Strings 45-105 - for Ibanez Roadstar
  • Wazinator Stompbox - simulates a bass drum sound. Andrew uses this for duos and acoustic gigs.
  • Gramma Isolation Riser - raises Andrew's amp off the floor and prevents unwanted bass frequencies from vibrating through the stage.
  • Warwick Rock Bag - Soft case for fretless Jaguar
  • Gator Hard Cases - for flying
  • Hercules Instrument Stands
  • Boss Tuners
  • SRV Colonial wide leather instrument straps
  • Schaller strap locks
  • Fender extra heavy picks
